The Power of White Space | 01

“The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between.”

- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

I was asked to share on several occasions what I have been thinking about, and any creative direction I am taking this year.

We don’t need to maximize everything

The theme of white space came to me when I reread the story of Ruth in the Bible. Boaz faithfully practiced an ancient Jewish law that required the Jews not to maximize their profit, leaving some untouched space in the field for the poor.

When you gather the food of your land, do not pick all the way to the corners of your field. And do not gather the food that falls. Leave it for those in need and the stranger. I am the Lord your God.” Leviticus 23:22

Because of his generosity, Boaz saved the lives of Ruth and Noami, and unknowingly preserved the linage of David and ultimately Jesus.

It is such a refreshing reminder that I don’t have to maximize everything in my life - my profit, time, energy, etc. We all need the white space in our lives so that unexpected, beautiful things can happen - helping those in need, spending time with family and friends, or simply enjoying the beauty of a setting sun.

White space is NOT wasted space or leftover space.

It is essential for our wellbeing. Without it, we would be like robots, running and running, without rest, beauty, and hope. It is in the white space where we let God do His work in our lives.
